Legal Studies

Why Pursue a Minor in Legal Studies at UNC Asheville?
UNC Asheville’s Legal Studies minor offers an interdisciplinary exploration of law, justice, and legal institutions through the lenses of political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and history. The program encourages students to think critically about the nature, purpose, and impact of law in society. Designed to complement a range of majors, the Legal Studies minor prepares students for graduate study or careers in fields such as law, public service, advocacy, mediation, government, and social justice.

Courses & Curriculum
The Legal Studies minor provides a broad and interdisciplinary framework for examining the foundations, applications, and consequences of law in society. Students select courses from at least three different disciplines—such as political science, sociology, philosophy, and psychology—while developing a deeper understanding of legal institutions, constitutional principles, civil liberties, and the ethics of justice. Electives span topics including criminal justice, theories of law, human rights, and the psychological dimensions of legal decision-making, allowing students to tailor the minor to their academic and professional interests.

Want to Prepare for Law School?
Even though the legal studies minor is not intended as a pre-law program or as a preparation for law school, UNC Asheville offers other courses to help you reach your goal. If you are interested in a pre-law course of study, please contact the Pre-Law Program Coordinator.
